AASA has a footprint in both urban and rural locations across five provinces, working alongside communities to claim their rights and drive transformative change.
AASA has a footprint in both urban and rural locations in five provinces across the country. Historically our focus has been on rural development with seven existing rural Local Rights Programmes (LRPs).
Rural poverty remains a key focus, with a commitment to deepen impact and show real change in the lives of communities. At the same time, we recognise that South Africa has an increasingly urbanised population, with some 60% of the population now living in cities and towns.
We work with local and national allies to support people living in poverty, particularly womxn, the youth and children to claim their human rights.
Community-based organisations embedded in the communities we work in, building local capacity and ensuring solutions are community-led and sustainable.
We support and amplify social movements — from land rights campaigners to feminist collectives — that are driving structural change from below.
Strategic partnerships with research institutions ensure our advocacy is grounded in evidence, strengthening our ability to challenge unjust policies.
Through coalitions and alliances, we amplify our collective voice and create greater impact than any single organisation could achieve alone.
We engage constructively with government while also holding it accountable — ensuring that public budgets and policies serve those who are most marginalised.
As part of ActionAid International's network, we connect South African struggles to global solidarity, resources and expertise in over 40 countries.
