Child Sponsorship

What is Child Sponsorship?

Child Sponsorship is a major source of organisational income and the work of ActionAid South Africa is supported by close to half a million individuals around the world, and for ActionAid South Africa this is made possible by support from 4, 885 supporters from Italy, United Kingdom and Brazil. These funds raised are spent directly in the community where the sponsored child is located.

By sponsoring a child, you are sending a signal that there will be a helping hand available not just for today but for as long as it is needed. As their sponsor you will become part of their life story. You’ll look forward to their letters and photos, and have the satisfaction of seeing them grow and thrive:

Where does my money go?

70% of the money supports your sponsored child’s community. And the community, in conjunction with our partners, decide what the money should be spent on. We’ll send you detailed updates on how your money’s being spent so you can see how your sponsorship is changing lives.

How does my contribution help?

We work directly with children, young people, their communities and their parents so they can grow food for the family. We support their community leaders in their demands for access to education. We have found that this is the most effective way to change a child’s life and help them thrive.

Regular Face-to-Face giving

We are passionate about reaching and changing the lives of children in South Africa. Every week, ActionAid Face-to-Face Fundraising teams are in shopping malls across South Africa , if you see us do stop by one of our tables and learn more about the work that we do and how you can support us.

Philanthropy and Partnerships

ActionAid South Africa has an ambitious target of tripling high value income over the next five years. With significant investment secured to diversify our fundraising approaches across the world, this will be the first time ActionAid has proactively fundraised nationally from sources within South Africa. We want to increase our income and expand our impact in South Africa. With the support of the International Fundraising Team and relevant countries within the region, we are launching a high value fundraising programme to generate significant gifts for ActionAid’s work including opportunities from major donors, companies and charitable trusts and foundations from across South Africa.

Institutional Partnership Development (IPD)

Funding sourced from government institutions or other large scale development agencies e.g. the Department for International Development (DFID), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) the European Commission (EC) and OZAID (Australian aid programme). With South Africa officially classified as a middle income country, this source of funding is shrinking, which has resulted in a need to prioritise sourcing funds from the other two income streams.
